The truth about the power of affirmations, and how to get them to work for you, not against you.
What are affirmations?
An affirmation is really anything that you say or think. A lot of what we say or think is negative and stems from past beliefs or experiences which don’t allow us to create the good experiences that we say we want.
In fact, most of us suffer from “rearview mirror syndrome” which is one of the most crippling causes of mediocrity. That’s a whole other blog post…which I should write… next. It is necessary to change and retrain our thinking and speaking into positive patterns if we want to change our lives. We must stop looking in our life’s rearview mirror and allowing our negative past experiences to impact the positive future experiences that we want.
When I talk about affirmations I am simply referring to consciously selecting your thoughts to eliminate or create something specific in your life that you want. You are taking charge and telling your subconscious mind, “I am taking control over my life and creating the change I want to see in it.” You are consciously selecting your thoughts to create positive experiences in your life.
Your beliefs are simply thoughts that you have been thinking over and over and over again. Most of which could have started when you were a young child based on someone else’s opinion or belief that they shoved on you. Some work well for you and others may be keeping you from being, doing, and having exactly what you say you want in your life. You must become extremely aware of the habitual thought patterns you have to be able to create the life you want. By doing so, you begin eliminating the thoughts creating experiences you don’t want.
One of the most important things to understand about affirmations is that every complaint you say or think is an affirmation of what you don’t want in your life. Every time you get angry, you’re affirming that you want more anger in your life. Every time you feel like a victim you are affirming that you want to keep feeling like a victim. If you complain about the bills you have to pay, you are certain to see more bills pop up that you don’t like paying. Until you change the way you think you will continue to get what you most think about.
Some people say that affirmations don’t work. What they don’t realize is that they don’t know how to use affirmations correctly. Some say their affirmations once a day but the rest of the day they are complaining. Which do you think will win? The negative complaints, of course, since they are usually said with great passion and belief. Saying positive affirmations is only part of the equation though. Affirmations are like seeds. You can’t plant a seed and then walk off and forget about it. You can’t plant a seed in poor soil and expect great growth. You need to keep watering that seed with positive thoughts or affirmation to see results.
Saying your positive affirmations out loud is a great way to recognize if your affirmations are going to attract what you want or more of what you don’t want in your life. Try this on for size, say the following two affirmations out loud, and see which one feels better.
“I do not want any more debt in my life.”
“I am grateful for my financial freedom.”
Which one do you think will bring you less debt and more money? Don’t confuse the Universe with the energy you are putting out there. The Universe is not biased, so be clear about what you want.
If you are thinking and speaking about debt you will most certainly receive more of that.
If you speak and think about financial freedom then you will certainly enjoy more of that.
In the beginning, you may feel a little silly or doubtful when you say or think your affirmations. This is normal and everyone goes through that in the beginning. If you already believed what you are affirming then it wouldn’t be necessary to affirm it. A belief is only a thought that you keep thinking. The more positive thoughts you have the easier it becomes. You won’t change things overnight but the more often and consistent you are with your positive affirmations you’ll definitely make and see positive changes in all areas of your life.
